Weapon Name

Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk

Weapon Type

Handguns, rocket launcher, shotgun, gatling gun, railgun

Classification

Nox Nyctores

The Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk (魔銃マジュウ・ベルヴェルク) is the third Nox Nyctores that takes the form of two handguns and has the ability to transform into numerous different firearms. It was created for Three in the Dark War, and after being wielded by various individuals, eventually found itself in the possession of Noel Vermillion.

Information

Created by Nine the Phantom during the Dark War to combat the Black Beast, and gifted to Three of the Ten Sages shortly afterwards. Bolverk is one of the various Nox Nyctores who's core was not removed after the war ended as it went missing shortly after Three's disappearance; it exchanged hands so many times that even Jubei became unsure of its whereabouts.[1]

After having been absent from history for nearly 80 years, Bolverk resurfaced and was re-purposed to seal the emotions of Mu-12, who would later become Noel. She accidentally summoned Bolverk for the first time when she was attacked near her home prior to her introduction to the Military Academy. [2] Yuuki Terumi broke the seal that Bolverk had on Noel's emotions [3], although she later regained control of them and Bolverk some time later. It is assumed that Bolverk still remains with Noel in the new world created by Ragna the Bloodedge.

Bolverk has the ability to fire shots that pierce through space and detonate an Ars Armegis blast. It can attack anything that the weapon and wielder deem as a target, and can ignore walls and various other obstacles.[4] These blasts can have their strength altered by the wielder at will, making them weak enough to just knock over small fruit, or strong enough to seriously damage opponents.[5] It can also transform into various other forms. These include a: minigun (Fenrir); rocket launcher (Thor); shotgun (Freyja), and a railgun (Sleipnir) - all are named after various ancient Norse deities. Shots fired by Bolverk are spherical and have a symbol of its handgun form being crossed over one-another.[6] Like other Nox Nyctores, such as the Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa, Bolverk can be summoned at any time by its wielder, but Noel chose to keep it in holsters in BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma and onward.

Like other Nox's, Bolverk has adverse effects on its wielder's mentality. Chiefly, Bolverk seals away emotions, such as hatred and anxiety, which makes it less dangerous than the other Nox's in terms of mental instability, but it can cause a wielder to become reckless as emotions such as fear are eliminated. Bolverk also communicates with its wielder, but unlike other Nox's, the relationship is relatively good with Noel. Because of its ability to seal away anxiety, Noel was able to communicate with other people, and the Nox has even warned her of beings it deems dangerous.[7]

Wielders

  • Three - created for; wielded throughout the Dark War until her death.
  • Various individuals after the Dark War.
  • Noel Vermillion - current wielder.

Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk

Nox Nyctores number 3. Possessed by Noel.

This weapon can perform attacks at will in the desired location, regardless of walls and other obstacles. It was once possessed by Three, one of the Ten Sages.

It's known that it serves not only as a weapon, but also as a 'Limiter' to hold back Noel's 'hatred.' [8]

Etymology

Arcus is Latin for "arc" or "bow", while Diabolus is Latin for "devil"; in Japanese, the characters used are those for "magic" or "demon" and "gun". Bolverk was an alias used by Odin and means "evil worker". Thus, Arcus Diabolus: Bolverk can be glossed as "Devil Bow: Evil Worker".
