Touya Kagari is the protagonist of XBlaze Code: Embryo and a major character in XBlaze Lost: Memories. He is the former wielder of the Signati Gladio Crystalis: Murakumo. One of the few survivors of the Wadatsumi Incident, Touya has no memories of anything before the event. In truth, he is not the real Touya Kagari, but rather the Origin of the Grimoire transformed into a clone of him.
Appearance
Touya is a young man with an average build. He sports somewhat messy, but mostly controlled medium brown hair styled with short bangs and one unruly hair sticking up at the crown of his head. His eyes are a warm amber color. His outfit typically consists of a royal-blue color uniform in the form of a suit. He wears a tucked in, white button-up dress shirt with an emblem emblazoned at the collar. At his neck is a red tie with downward pointing black chevrons at the tie's knot and at the end of the full length. His suit jacket has a black collar, black trim, and a white inner lining. The cuffs are striped white and blue with gold cufflinks. Touya wears a simple brown belt with a silver buckle at his waist. His dress pants match his jacket and have creases down the legs. His outfit is completed with a pair of brown loafers.
Personality
Touya is incredibly kind and hates seeing other people get hurt. Whenever he sees a fight he will jump into it to break it up, even if he gets injured in the process. He says he can’t even control this as he does it without thinking. Touya also has a lot of survivor’s guilt over living through the Wadatsumi Incident and sees himself as a burden to others, hence why he insists he needs to pay rent to live with the Himezuru’s. Despite his niceness, there are several ways to make Touya angry. These include threatening his loved ones, suggesting he abandon his loved ones and not treating Es like a human. When pushed too far Touya snaps, unleashing the power of the Origin of the Grimoire.
Biography
Code: Embryo
After having a strange dream in which he sees a girl with glowing blue eyes his mother, Ryoko Kagari, tells him to “protect” Touya wakes up in his classroom to Hinata Himezuru humming. He realizes that it’s already past 4 and Akira Kamewari is running late. Akira arrives and returns a data stick containing a summary of the serial killer reports that Touya had put together. Touya then begins reading an article about the Wadatsumi Incident and Akira steals his phone to look at it, telling Touya not to worry about the past. Touya then leaves to go to his part-time job at Maha☆Raja~.
After getting out of work Touya hears a strange bell-like sound and feels the urge to track it down. He follows the sound into the Restricted Ward. When Touya arrives he finds an injured Goro Joizumi, who tries to tell Touya to stay away from him. However, he succumbs to madness and sees Touya as an enemy, attacking Touya with his Drive. Touya tries to run away but is eventually cornered. Before Goro can kill him Es arrives and attacks Goro. Touya watches in horror as Es proceeds to mercilessly beat down Goro. Eventually, Touya jumps in the way to stop Es from killing Goro but gets knocked out by Es for interfering.
After waking up Touya heads home. Hinata greets him and tells him that a guest has been waiting for over an hour to see him. He freaks out when he finds that Es is the guest. He learns that Es has been assigned to guard him and tries to get answers about the situation but only gets more confused. Souichiro Unomaru and Mei Amanohokosaka then arrive and he is forcibly stripped by Es to search for a crystal. After taking a sample of his blood Unomaru and Mei leave Es in the Himezuru residence.
When he wakes up the next morning Es was already gone. On the way to school he recounts that he slept on the couch because Es came into his bed while he was asleep to monitor him. After Es explains that she would follow any order, even if it meant dying, Touya gets angry. Akira then arrives to join them and wants to know what is going on with Touya. Touya begs Hinata not to tell, but she does anyway, doing so in a way that makes Akira misinterpret things. After Touya finally manages to explain himself Akira tells Touya to be more careful. Akira mentions that there was a gang fight in the Restricted Ward the night before, which Touya finds strange. At school he is shocked to find Es has transferred into his class to continue monitoring him. [1]
During a break Unomaru arrives at Hakuo North Academy to talk to Touya. He tells Touya that the Mitsurugi Agency bought Touya’s school, claiming it’s a coincidence but it is actually to allow Es to transfer in easily so she can continue to guard Touya. He also explains that for some reason Touya can hear a Discover Call up to 300 meters away. Unomaru plays on Touya’s desire to protect people to try and convince him to use his powers to assist Es in tracking down Unions. When that fails he plays on Touya’s guilt over surviving the Wadatsumi Incident, telling him that his mother, Ryoko Kagari, was responsible for the incident and the Union outbreak as a result. After school Touya tells Es that he’ll cooperate with the Mitsurugi Agency. Mei than arrives and, after hitting him several times, places the Goofball Proximity Surveyor on his head.
After school Touya sees Akira with someone he doesn’t know. He then hears a Discover Call from that direction so he and Es follow while Hinata goes shopping. They find Akira and Kuon Glamred Stroheim after Akio Osafune fled but Kuon quickly departs. After meeting back up with Hinata he explains to them about Unions and that Es is guarding him but leaves out the connection between the Wadatsumi Incident and the Union outbreak. After getting home he is greeted by Yuki Himezuru, who proceeds to tease him mercilessly before taking a bath. Once Yuki gets out Touya goes to take a bath himself but finds Es and Hinata taking a bath together. Luckily, he manages to leave without being seen.
Having determined that Akio has most likely progressed to phase four, Es and Touya go out in order to find him. [2] Hearing Akio’s Discover Call coming from the Restricted Ward, Touya and Es head there. Once they arrive they are attacked by Akio, with Es deflecting Akio’s shots. Akio then asks Touya if he is “Touya Kagari” and demands he hand over the Grimoire but Touya has no idea what he’s talking about. Akio decides to just kill him and take the Girmoire from his corpse, preparing to launch a giant steel tower at him and Es but Kuon destroys it. She then introduces herself to him. After Akio wakes up Es begins interrogating him. When Akio refuses to answer she beats him, much to Touya’s horror. Once Drei arrives Es explains to him about the Ten Sages and says that if Drei and Kuon were to fight, Kuon would lose. Es suggests they leave if that happens but Touya refuses saying he needs to help Kuon. However, he is interrupted by the arrival of Acht. Once Drei and Acht leave Touya’s head starts hurting and he starts screaming due to seeing Sechs and he passes out.
The next morning Touya wakes up in his room and runs out in a panic to find Es. He finds her in the hallway and she explains that Kuon has also been assigned to protect him. Touya asks to speak to Kuon alone so Hinata takes Es with her. Kuon explains to him about Mages and tells Touya that the reason they are targeting probably has something to do with the Grimoire but Touya claims he doesn’t have it.
Touya then meets with Akira and tells him about Kuon staying with him. Touya gets confused when Akira compares him to a video game protagonist and doesn’t see his situation as anything but a burden for Yuki. He then sees Mei and when he goes to speak with her she tells him that she’ll protect him on her own so he shouldn’t rely on someone from the Magic Guild. He is surprised to find that Kuon has also transferred into his class. [3]
Kuon calls Touya and Es to the roof and tells them about the Ten Sages and the Origin of the Grimoire. When asked why he is working with the Mitsurugi Agency, Touya explains his history with the Wadatsumi Incident; that he was one of the few survivors and has no memories before the event and about the strange dream he’s been having. Furthermore, since his mother was in charge of the experiment that caused the Union outbreak, Touya feels it is his responsibility to help fix the problem. Kuon then promises to look into Ishana’s database for information on the Grimoire.
Despite Es’s suggestion that he not go to his part-time job due to potential danger Touya insists he has to go. Es agrees but says she will wait outside the entire time. They then see police cars going by but don’t do anything since Touya hasn’t detected a Discover Call. At work he has to put up with more of Ringo Akagi’s antics.
After work Touya and Es see Mei in the area where they saw police activity and go over to her. Touya gets hit for sneaking up on her. While Mei works he asks Es what she is doing, causing Mei to yell at him for distracting her. Upon seeing Akio’s dead body Toua throws up. After finding the night watchman’s body Touya senses a Union and warns Es and Mei. Es deflects a thrown knife but Ripper throws a smoke bomb at them. Ripper appears behind him but Es drives him off. He and Mei follow after Es but Touya is too slow so Mei decides to just carry him there while flying. After Ripper escapes Avenge tells Touya, Es and Mei to leave Ripper to him and he’ll kill them if they get in his way. Touya approaches him, saying he has no right to threated people but Avenge knocks him out for his trouble. He wakes up to find Es carrying him home on her back, much to his embarrassment. Es apologizes for allowing Touya to get hurt but Touya says it’s his fault. Es asks him why he keeps putting himself in danger and Touya explains that he can’t stand seeing people get hurt and acts without thinking. He then requests that Es try to hold back from hurting people but she says she can’t promise that since it might interfere with her mission. Once they get home they are greeted by Hinata, who takes Es with her to the bath and tells Touya to go in next. He then tells Kuon about his encounter with Ripper. Kuon then tells Touya about Code: Embryo and that the Wadatsumi Incident and Grimoire are linked. [4]
At the pool two days later he questions Unomaru’s intentions for bringing them there. He spends time with Hinata, Kuon, Mei and Es, teaching Es the meaning of fun in the process.
On the school roof during lunch Touya tells Es that he hasn’t heard a Discover Call in a while and Es explains that it is because they have been finding many Unions who have been killed by Ripper. When Hinata joins them he asks Es where her name comes from but she doesn’t know. Kuon then joins and asks Touya if he’s an anime fan, which he declines.
Es tells him about the series of deaths caused by Gainart episodes. Kuon explains that it was caused by one of the Ten Sages asks for his and Es’s assistance in finding them and he agrees to help. At the location where Akira and his thugs attacked Akira Kuon casts a spell on him that will let him detect magic so he can help find the wards place around the city by the Ten Sages. Kuon tells him about the Sealed Spear: Izayoi, Legacy Weapons and the Sword of Destruction: Kusanagi, leading Es to look up information on them and tell him about the dangers of using Izayoi. Touya says he can’t let her use it no matter what. Finding the last ward at the docks, the three encounter Sechs. He asks Sechs if he is a Union and the one turning others into Unions, which Sechs confirms. When Sechs tries to use his Drive on Kuon Touya gets in the way. Touya yells at Sechs for treating his sister like that but Sechs merely finds him interesting before leaving. After checking to make sure Kuon is all right she asks for some time alone so he leaves with Es. [5]
Touya and Es arrive home to see Elise Von Klagen staring at the Himezuru residence. Es tells Touya about the ward around the house that should make it invisible to unauthorized people so anyone else who can see it is suspicious. Elise then introduces herself to them, explaining that she was sent by the Magic Guild and thanking him for taking care of Kuon. Elise tries to get him to admit that Kuon is being a burden but he says that it is his fault, not hers. Later Mei calls Touya to learn what happened with Sechs but she gets mad when he says he was with Kuon, telling him how the Magic Guild ruined the Amanohokosaka clan. Kuon comes to speak with him and Touya asks her about it, with Kuon concluding that it is probably true. She then asks Touya to go shopping with her and Elise since it will supposedly make Elise consider returning to Ishana. Touya is initially hesitant because it seems pointless but Kuon convinces him it would be best if Elise leaves soon.
The next day Touya is exhausted, realizing he was just brought along to carry their stuff. He and Es have a discussion about her thinking for herself but Es simply says she can’t ignore her orders. After they finish shopping Touya asks Elise if she did this just to try and cheer Kuon up. Elise suggests going to a nearby café but Touya feels guilty having Elise buy something for him because it is attached to a five-star hotel. He is then approached by Hinata, who was out shopping with Akira. When Akira says he wants Hinata to help him buy a gift for a girl Kuon and Elise suggest they keep shopping. He is confused why they are splitting up so soon after meeting and has to be dragged away by Elise and Es. At the café they spot Acht. When Acht prepares to attack with Ice magic and Hinata comes running in he tells Es to protect Hinata instead of him but she refuses. Once Acht leaves Hinata asks him if he’s all right, which he confirms. The next day on the school roof he discusses with Es, Hinata and Kuon that Akira didn’t show up for school. Once Hinata leaves he is approached, and hit, by Mei, who demands to know what happened the day before. Touya tells her about the confrontation with Acht and Mei complains that she is getting more work, wondering why one of the Ten Sages was out in the open. Kuon and Mei get into a fight and he says they seem to get along well, which angers the two and confuses Es. Once Kuon leaves Mei tells Touya what she initially came to him for; that three more bodies had been found and someone who looked like Akira was spotted nearby, although Mei doubts he’s responsible. Touya is adamant that Akira would never do something like that. After school Kuon asks Touya and Hinata how long they’ve been friends with Akira and they tell her about how their past. Akira would constantly get into fights and Touya would always charge in to break them up, getting injured in the process. They then split up to look for Akira while Hinata goes home.
While searching for Akira that night Es asks Touya why he cares so much about finding Akira. Touya says it’s because he’s a dear friend but Es doesn’t understand anything being important beyond completing her mission. She finds it strange that Touya is being allowed to roam free so Touya suggests she asks Unomaru but she says she has been unable to reach the Mitsurugi Agency. Touya then hears a Discover Call coming from the Himezuru residence and they run off in a hurry. [6] They arrive home to find Acht holding an unconscious Hinata. Es tells Touya that Acht is too powerful for her to defeat so they should give up on Hinata and escape, something that makes Touya furious. He runs in to save Hinata himself but Acht simply blasts him away with Ice magic. Acht prepares to finish him off so Es runs into to attack, prepared to kill Hinata to save him. As he screams for Es to stop she is restrained by Akira’s Drive. Akira then knocks her out and attacks Touya, knocking him unconscious. Once Touya wakes up Kuon tells him what happened and that he should stay in the house while she and Elise search for Akira, which Touya agrees to. Touya runs into Es and demands to know if she was seriously planning to hurt Hinata. When Es doesn’t answer he walks away, saying he can’t stand looking at her right now. Touya becomes angry that everyone is searching for Akira while he’s sitting there doing nothing. Yuki then appears behind Touya, surprising him. Over coffee he confides in her that he put Hinata in danger and is being a burden to her but she denies this, saying Hinata will be fine.
The next morning Hinata wakes up fine, having been asleep through the entire event. She tells him that Es was worried about him and stayed outside his room the entire night but he quickly leaves. After Kuon and Elise leave Es tells Touya that she will take a three-hour break and that she informed Mei about this. He wonders if something is wrong since Es has never taken a break but then recalls Es trying to abandon Hinata. Touya takes the opportunity to sneak out and search for Akira before Mei arrives. Before he can get away he gets caught by Mei, who decides she will accompany him somewhere close by. He chooses to go to Maha☆Raja~. After meeting with Ringo, and being teased for bringing another girl, Mei tells him about the history of her clan. Es then arrives and takes him back home. Once they get home Kuon says she needs to talk to Touya and Es. Telling them about Akira’s unnatural crystal progression and that they need to stop him before he reaches phase five and is marked for termination. She says that nobody has survived being Union-infected and Touya should prepare for the worst. Touya goes back to his room and is greeted by Hinata, who asks to spend some time with him since she’s worried about Akira. Touya falls asleep and finds Hinata has left when he wakes up before remembering about Akira. He then receives a phone call from Akira, who tells him to come to the school alone. In order to get past Es he tells her he heard a Discover Call coming from the abandoned factory. When Es points out that it is more than 500 meters away, outside the range of Touya’s ability, he tells her it’s an order, so she goes.
Touya finds Akira on the roof and tells him to come with him, but Akira says he’s too far-gone and attacks Touya, seeing Touya as nothing but an enemy. Before Akira can kill Touya he is saved by Es. Es says she followed him despite being required to follow orders and isn’t sure why she did this. Es is unable to stand up to Akira’s attacks and asks Touya to run away while she distracts Akira, even saying “please.” Touya angrily asks if she is planning on having him abandon her as well but she says it’s okay since she isn’t part of his family. When Es and Akira go to attack each other Touya jumps in the way of their attacks, saying he doesn’t want them to kill each other. Touya reminds Akira that he used to jump into Akira’s fights like he just did and that Akira promised he wouldn’t fight anymore, bringing Akira back to his senses. Akira then rips the crystal out of his arm. After collapsing Akira apologizes for breaking his promise before falling unconscious. [7] After Akira is taken to the hospital Unomaru finally contacts Es and tells her to return to the Agency so she says goodbye to Touya.
The next day at the hospital he learns that Yuki was aware of the Union outbreak and she tells him about Akira’s condition. That evening he tells Kuon that Es was able to return to the Mitsurugi Agency and Kuon breaks her promise to Mei, telling Touya about Es being an artificial human. They are then approached by Unomaru. Once Kuon leaves Touya asks Unomaru about Es and, despite claiming it is confidential, he tells Touya that she is a Prime Field Interference Manifestation. Touya doesn’t care about that, wanting to know why Unomaru abandoned Es. Unomaru claims that it’s because he was close to finishing developing the new version of her and when he becomes focused on something he can’t pay attention to anything else. Touya is horrified by Unomaru’s callousness towards Es, with him calling her a thing and assuming Touya is worrying more about what happens to her body once she dies then about keeping her alive. When Unomaru is about to leave Sechs, Drei and Acht suddenly appear behind them. Touya demands to know why Sechs turned Akira into a Union but Drei says it’s because Akira wished for it. Unomaru asks Sechs why he abandoned his status as one of the Ten Sages and Sechs says that to reach “zero” is completion. Sechs then asks Unomaru what he desires most from the world and Unomaru says he simply wants the prosperity of all mankind and will do anything to achieve that, even controlling a god if one exists. Sechs asks Touya the same question but Touya doesn’t answer, merely wanting to know why Sechs turned Akira into a Union. Sechs says it was to show Touya the truth and asks him what he wants again. Touya says he wants to protect people from being hurt by people like Sechs, but Unomaru asks him what he’d do if his existence caused people harm. He tells Touya ask himself why he exists before he, Drei and Acht disappear. Unomaru calls them rude for just showing up, lecturing people and leaving and says he has no idea what they’re trying to accomplish before Touya hears a Discover Call coming from Akira’s room and runs off.
Touya reaches Akira’s room but only finds Kuon there; who tells him that Hinata went shopping. He then receives a call from Hinata’s phone but it is actually Ripper, who has kidnapped Hinata. Touya asks if this has something to do with the Grimoire but Ripper says he forgot he was asked about that, only doing this because he finds Touya interesting. Ripper tells Touya he has to find them before sundown or he’ll kill Hinata and hangs up. On the way out he sees Yuki who saw Kuon run out of the room and asks if she was going back to the house. Touya lies and says yes before telling her he has to go. He frantically runs around the city but has no luck finding her. After running into Kuon he receives another call from Ripper, who says he’s tired of waiting and activates his Drive so Touya can follow the Discover Call to him. With the help of Kuon’s magic they reach Ripper and find Hinata unconscious and hanging over the edge of the roof by a chain. Touya begs Ripper to let Hinata go but Ripper just makes fun of him. Ripper tells Touya that he has a strange “odor” similar to his own and Sechs’s and he wants to find out why that is for fun. In order to make Touya unleash his power Ripper tells him that he was the one who murdered Yuki’s parents. When that doesn’t work Ripper cuts the chain holding Hinata, leaving her to fall to her death. Touya goes berserk, unleashing the power of the Origin of the Grimoire, which steals the seithr from Ripper’s body, causing him to run off saying it’s not fun anymore. Unable to control himself, Touya also saps Kuon of her strength. Mei arrives, healing Kuon, alongside Es, who reveals she caught Hinata and she is fine. This causes Touya to return to normal. [8] Once Touya wakes up Mei promises to tell him and Kuon everything she knows but suggests they return to the Himezuru residence since it’s too dangerous where they are.
Back at the Himezuru residence Es tells Touya that Hinata is all right and Touya thanks her. Mei calls for Touya to come down so he asks Es to keep an eye on Hinata for him, which she agrees to. Touya thinks that Es seems different but is pulled out of his thoughts by Mei yelling at him. Mei tells him about Unomaru’s plan and about the Gate of Sheol underneath the Wadatsumi Research Facility. Mei then tells him and Kuon about the Amanohokosaka’s history guarding the Gate and that the first Azure Shrine Maiden stopped the Black Beast from emerging by luring it back into the Gate and sealing both of them inside it. Touya has doubts that Unomaru is planning what the Ten Sages said he is, which angers Kuon. This leads to Kuon and Mei getting into a fight, which Touya hopelessly tries to stop. Kuon then leaves, saying she’s going to speak to Sechs one more time and that she’ll probably never return to the Himezuru residence. Mei tells Touya that she will be guarding Touya from now on in case the Grimoire goes berserk again but he is worried about Kuon and runs off. Touya is unable to find Kuon and wonders if she should have left it to Es and Mei. Es finds him, telling him that he has been classified as a high-risk Union by Unomaru and she has been ordered to bring him in. Learning that Mei is in charge of the unit searching for him Touya says he needs to find Kuon and asks Es to wait on capturing him until then but Es says she wants to guard him. Touya refuses when she says she’ll be killed for disobeying orders and that she’ll be at risk if he loses control again saying she’s too important to lose. Es promises that if Touya ever loses control of the Grimoire she will stop him no matter what so that he cannot hurt his loved ones, which he agrees to. Before they can escape into the sewers Mei finds them. Touya tells her about Es’s promise to kill him and Es says she knows she will die for betraying the Mitsurugi Agency, which causes Mei to say she quits in frustration, saying the two need to care about their own lives more and consider how those close to them would feel if they died. Mei tells Touya she will find Kuon so he should focus on escaping. Mei covers for them with a smoke bomb and they escape underground. They are nearly caught by agents from the Mitsurugi Agency but are rescued by Avenge, who takes them to somewhere where they’ll be safe. Touya wants to know why Avenge is helping them and Avenge says it is because he felt like it. Touya thanks him but Avenge says he should be thanking Touya for allowing him to kill Ripper. Touya doesn’t know how to feel about Ripper being dead and Avenge says he is stronger then he seems. Avenge says that he is basically a serial killer who is no different than Ripper for hunting down and killing Unions but he can live with it as long as he is aware of it. He then tells Touya that, while he didn’t kill Ripper himself, it was his actions that led to Ripper’s death and he must accep that, with Touya saying yes. Avenge then asks Touya if he wants to know about his mother’s role in the Wadatsumi Incident, even if he’d be better off knowing. Touya grabs Avenge and demands to know. Avenge tells Touya that the Takamagahara Organization was forcing Touya’s mother to build the T-System and that the Embryo was meant to be its core. Touya is shocked that it means Unomaru was doing as the Ten Sages said, which surprises Avenge that Unomaru is continuing Takamahagara’s research. Es then explains about the Embryo’s power to use Phenomenon Intervention and that with it it would be possible for the T-System to control the thoughts of everyone on the planet. Es says that the T-System would be impossible since they don’t have an energy source big enough for it but Touya realizes that they intend to use the Boundary and its infinite supply of seithr. Suddenly Es detects a large number of Mitsurugi Agency soldiers and Avenge tells them to go ahead while he deals with them.
After they leave and discuss what to do next they are attacked by Drei. Drei claims he was aiming for Es, calling her a “doll.” Touya angrily claims that Es is no different from a normal human but Drei says that artificial beings are not part of Sechs’s plan and therefore cannot exist. [9] Drei attacks and Es but Touya takes the attack for himself. Drei tells Touya to stand aside and watch him kill Es, attacking her again. As Touya starts to lose control he tells Es to fulfill their promise but Drei stops Es from killing him. Touya screams for Drei to stop attacking Es and suddenly finds himself surrounded in pitch black where a mysterious man, taking the form of Ripper, tells him he’s inside the Grimoire. Ripper explains that Ripper is dead but he is an illusion created by Touya. He then attacks Touya. A version of Es appears behind Ripper and Touya is forced to watch as she is cut apart as well. Ripper says that it is Touya’s fault Es is dead because if Touya had killed him this wouldn’t have happened. Ripper then stabs Touya repeatedly, telling Touya he is weak for not wanting to kill people. When Touya says he doesn’t want to die or kill people, Ripper suggests that means it’s okay to hurt people, which Touya is unable to answer. Ripper then says he’ll let Touya use the Grimoire a bit, activating “Code: Soul Eater, Limited Penance” and saying they’ll speak again. Back in the real world, Touya unleashes the power of the Origin of the Grimoire on Drei and tells Es to get behind him. Es asks if he can control the Grimoire and Touya says he doesn’t know but it feels like he can. When Touya refuses to back down, Drei says that he can still break every bone in Touya’s body, as long as he doesn’t kill him. Touya threatens to unleash the Grimoire again but nothing happens. As Drei is about to attack he is stopped by Avenge. Avenge tells them to leave Drei to him and run to Mei. Touya thanks Avenge and he and Es run off.
After they escape, Touya asks Es if Avenge will be all right and Es says it is possible since Drei was weakened. Es then asks Touya if he can control the Grimoire but Touya says he isn’t sure he has a hundred percent control since he can’t use it now. Es collpases but Touya catches her. Touya apologizes, saying she’s probably cold because Touya’s clothese are wet but Es says he’s very warm. Emerging from the sewers, the two encounter Mei, whio says she still hasn’t found Kuon. Mei yells at them for smelling and says she has a spare set of clothes for Es. Mei tells Touya to go home and get a change of clothes and when Touya asks if he will be safe their, she tells him that Elise sent out a false lead that Touya was on a bullet train away from Shin Yokozaki City. Touya wants to tell Mei about the T-System and the Ten Sages but Mei reveals she had Avenge put a wiretap on him and already knows about it. They decide to head back to the Himezuru residence and are greeted by Hinata. Hinata grabs him and tells him to go and get changed. After getting changed, he finds Mei, who tells him about Kuon while insulting her. Kuon tells Touya and Mei to meet her downstairs since she has important information from Elise. After Hinata leaves, Kuon reads a letter from Elise that contains her findings about the Wadatsumi Incident. She discovered that Unomaru was a survivor of the incident and that he was not working to treat the Unions he captured, but rather to gather their crystals so he can refine the Embryo. She also found that TOi is powered by the T-System and was created to be a high-level information control system. They figure out that Unomaru is likely at the Wadatsumi Research Facility attempting to complete the T-System. Mei says Touya should stay behind because of the Grimoire and because it’s too dangerous but Touya says he has something he needs to ask Unomaru. Kuon says they should bring Touya along and promises to kill him if he loses control so Mei agrees but says she’ll send him hom if things get too dangerous. They then discuss that they need to deal with the Ten Sages, Mei revealing that Avenge told her that he killed Drei. Mei theorizes that the Origin of the Grimoire is the only thing that can destroy the Embryo and the Ten Sages have been trying to cause Touya to activate it for that reason. Mei asks if they have anything they need to do before they head out and Es asks for pudding so Mei begrudgingly says they’ll wait until Hinata returns. Touya then receives a call from Yuki. Yuki says she can’t come home that night but she has some good news before giving the phone to Akira. Akira apologizes for making Touya worry. Akira asks Touya if he’s about to do something stupid but says Touya will be fine. After taking the phone back, Yuki tells Touya that Akira is fine but his rehabilitation is going to be hell. Touya says they need to have dinner together again soon and Yuki says of course they will since they’re family and hangs up. Touya then tells Kuon and Mei that Akira is going to be all right. Kuon is relieved but Mei says she finds his ability to survive gross like an insect. Just as Mei complains about Hinata taking a long time to get back, she arrives with pudding. Touya then tells Hinata that they will be out late and she shouldn’t wait up for them but she insists she will. [10]
Arriving at the Restricted Ward, Mei finds it odd that there is no one there. Es doesn’t detect any human presence in side and says if they are going to go inside they should do it now. Inside, Touya recalls how he first met Es. This causes Kuon and Mei to get in another fight, with Mei saying she can’t believe she is working alongside someone from the Magic Guild. Kuon promises that she will force the Magic Guild to change its ways once she gets back to Ishana but Mei must reclaim Wadatsumi in exchange. Mei accepts and they approach the wall around the Wadatsumi Research Facility. They are suddenly attacked by Acht’s Ice magic. Es deflects all of the attacks and Acht remarks that she hoped to kill at least one of them with that attack. Acht says she has no idea where Sechs is and is no longer involved with him, she just wants to go crazy. Acht says that they must defeat her in order to go on. She tells Touya to go away since she doesn’t want to deal with him, but then says she’s just kidding and attempts to kill him. However, Es protects him. Acht calls Touya pathetic for always having others protect him. She then attacks him again but is intercepted by Mei, who tells Touya to go home and he runs off.
Touya calls himself pathetic for not being able to fight. He wonders why he was able to control the Grimoire against Drei and tries to use it again but nothing happens. Touya decides to try and talk to Unomaru and convince him to stop refining the Embryo as well as ask him about his mother and why he was at Wadatsumi during the incident. Upon reaching the Wadatsumi Research Facility, he is met by Es, who asks why he hasn’t returned home. Touya asks Es why she’s here and she says she figured Touya wouldn’t listen to Mei based on his past actions. Touya says he meant what would happen to Kuon and Mei without her but Es says she has confidence that they will be okay. Touya says he doesn’t want anything to happen to her but Es says she made a promise to him and Touya apologizes for trying to break it. They then head in together.
Inside the Wadatsumi Research Facility, Touya and Es find it odd that they haven’t run into anyone yet. Es says that they have passed many security systems and none of them have activated, suggesting this is a trap. Suddenly, they are confronted by an Es-N unit and Unomaru talks to them over the speaker system. Unomaru tells Touya to go into an elevator and come down to him if he wants to talk, but specifies that only Touya is welcome. Unomaru calls Es garbage and rants about how much surperior the Es-N are, which angers Touya. Unomaru tells the Es-N to kill Es and capture Touya so Touya and Es run. Es says that she will stay and fight Es-N while Touya goes on ahead. Es tells Touya that she has killed many Unions without questioning orders but she has realized that what she did was wrong, saying she has committed so many sins she is beyond redemption, but hopes to try by protecting Touya. Touya goes to confront Unomaru while Es stays to fight Es-N.
Touya takes the elevator down to the core of the T-System where he is greeted by Unomaru and four more Es-N units. Unomaru reveals that he created eight of them, with another on the way and sent reinforcements to take care of Es. Touya says he needs to go back but Unomaru tells him he locked the door behind Touya. Unomaru thanks Touya for coming to him and making things easy but Touya says he came to stop Unomaru from refining the Embryo. Unomaru asks him why he’d want to do that, saying that humanity will destroy itself within a century if left on its own. Unomaru tells Touya the story about his parents and says he wants to end pointless fights and help humanity reach its full potential. Touya says he might have a point but it’s wrong to manipulate people like that and he’s afraid people will stop thinking for themselves. Unomaru then tells Touya that his mother was also opposed to the T-System and during the Wadatsumi Incident she shut down the T-System right before it was completed, causing the incident but she managed to contain the damage to just the Restricted Ward. Angry that she stopped the T-System, Unomaru doctored documents to make it seem like Ryoko Kagari was in charge of the experiment and blame the incident on her as revenge. Touya calls Unomaru insane since his mother was just trying to save people but Unomaru says Touya is the same since his Origin of the Grimoire is what caused the black wind that engulfed the Restricted Ward. Unomaru says it’s time to refine the Embryo, which confuses Touya since he came to stop it but Unomaru counters that refining it would be impossible without Touya. He then orders the Es-N units to release the Grimoire and they pin Touya to the ground with their swords. Unomaru tells Touya that the Es-N’s weapons were made from from Mei’s blood and have the power to control the flow of seithr, allowing them to forcibly control the Origin of the Grimoire. [11] Unomaru then reveals to Touya that Hinata is Code: Embryo, causing Touya to become enraged and start unleashing the Grimoire, which Unomaru says just saves him work. Unomaru has Touya absorb the seithr of all the Unions’ crystals he’s collected and give it to the Embryo, completing the Embryo and opening the Gate of Sheol to the Boundary. Unomaru then reveals to Touya that Hinata is Code: Embryo, causing Touya to become enraged and start unleashing the Grimoire, which Unomaru says just saves him work. Unomaru has Touya absorb the seithr of all the Unions’ crystals he’s collected and give it to the Embryo, completing the Embryo and opening the Gate of Sheol leading to the Boundary. Unomaru says all he needs to do is go to the T-System’s control room and activate it in order to take control of the world. He also says he needs to hurry since leaving the Gate open for too long could kill everyone. Unomaru starts going mad with power, saying he feels like he can do anything and laughing maniacally. However, Sechs suddenly appears and stabs Unomaru with the Sword of Destruction: Kusanagi. Sechs says that Unomaru’s time has come. Unomaru orders the Es-N units to kill Sechs but Sechs effortlessly defeats all of them. As Sechs turns his attention to the Embryo, Unomaru starts stumbling forward, saying he won’t lose to Sechs but falls into the Boundary.
Es arrives at the core of the T-System to find Sechs in front of Hinata. Es runs over to Touya, asking him if he’s all right and what’s happened. Touya tells Es that Hinata is the Embryo, that Sechs is going to kill her and that he already killed Unomaru, asking Es to save Hinata. Es tells Sechs to get away from Hinata but Sechs calls her a “doll” and tells her if she gets in his way he’ll eliminate her as well, attacking her with the Sword Of Destruction: Kusanagi. Es wonders how any human could have this much power and Sechs explains that it is because of the Kusanagi and Hinata’s Phenomenon Interventions. Sechs says that destroying the Embryo will free the Boundary, flooding the world with seithr and melding everyone’s souls into one. Sechs then fires the Kusanagi at Hinata, who falls into the Boundary. As Touya tries to jump into the Boundary after Hinata, but Sechs says he will send Touya back to seithr and attacks him with Kusanagi, knocking him unconscious. Once again, Touya meets with “Ripper” in a black void. Touya tells Ripper to send him back back so he can save Hinata, but Ripper says this isn’t the time for that. Ripper encourages Touya to get angry, saying he’ll be swallowed if he stays weak, Touya says he doesn’t care, he just needs to get out of there and Ripper tells him he can leave as long as he accepts “it.” Ripper then goes on that the strong eating the weak is the rule of the world and that Touya already started to accept it when he gave in to Ripper’s earlier suggestion that it is okay to hurt people. Touya asks he if Ripper is asking him to kill, with Ripper replying that Touya can either die or accept the burden of living. Touya says he’s made up his mind; that he wants to protect those dear to him, even if it means committing sins. Touya is then transported to a white void where he meets with another version of himself. This other Touya asks him to say their name. This second Touya says that “Touya Kagari” is the name that the Grimoire came from and reveals himself as the arbitrator of the Origin of the Grimoire. Touya is confused, since he is supposed to be “Touya Kagari” but the arbitrator says that the two are one and the same. The arbitrator says that in order to use the Origin of the Grimoire, one needs a strong spirit and if one trys to force its use they will lose themself; revealing that he was born when Touya lost control. The Arbitrator says he doesn’t know if it happened because they absorbed Ripper’s seithr or for self-preservation but the reason doesn’t matter. He continutes on that he will teach Touya special words that will let him channel the power of the Grimoire through his body. Touya wakes up back in the real world and sees Kuon and Mei unconscious, wondering where Es went before Sechs tells him she returned to the seithr. Touya demands to know why Sechs can kill people so easily and to bring everyone back but Sechs says not to worry since Touya will soon be returned to the seithr as well. As Sechs prepares to strike, he hears Es’s voice telling him not to give up and to say those words. Touya then picks up the Signati Gladio Crystalis: Murakumo and says “Code: Soul Eater. XBLAZE, ignite!” Touya declares that he will stop Sechs and attacks him. Touya is able to hold his own against Sechs’s attacks for a while but Sechs says Touya will not be able to scratch him with that level of power and begins his attack anew, overwhelming Touya. Sechs tells Touya that he has grown stronger each time the world has been remade and even with the Origin of the Grimoire, Touya alone cannot win. Touya then hears Es’s voice telling him to come to her.
Using the Embryo’s powers, Es pulls Touya into an enclosed space with her. Touya asks what happened to Hinata and Es reassures him that she restored Hinata’s body and returned her to the Himezurue as well as that when Hinata wakes up she will not remember that she was the Embryo. Es says that with Phenonemon Intervention she can return everything to when it was peaceful but it will not work against Sechs because he has the Kusanagi. The Sword of Destruction: Kusanagi nullifies Phenomenon Intervention and so Sechs retains his memories whenever the world is reset. Es tells Touya that Hinata already recreated the world many times without control of the Embryo. Hinata did this to try and protect everyone but each time distortions would occur and Sechs would get stronger. Touya asks Es if there’s anything he can do and Es responds that only he can do something about it. Since this phenomenon was born from an event in Touya’s past, the current version of him should be able to change it. Es tells Touya that she will send him to where everything began, the first iteration of the world and once he’s there he must eliminate a Union. Es apologizes that she is forcing Touya to kill someone but it is the only way. Touya understands that this is a sin he has to endure and accepts. Es tells him he only has one chance to intervene and sends him to the past. Touya hears a Discover Call and follows it to Sechs in the Restricted Ward. Touya and Sechs charge at each other and Touya manages to shatter Sechs’s crystal. This shatters the crystal of the Sechs in the present as well and he falls into the Boundary.
Back in the enclosed space with Es, Touya says he can still feel the sensation of cutting Sechs’s crystal and realizes this is what Es has been feeling all this time. Es welcomes Touya back and tells him that Sechs has returned to the Boundary and the distortions of the past have been erased, allowing the future to continue on. Es says that Touya was able to protect everything like she knew he would. Touya tells Es they should return home but Es reveals she cannot return. The Embryo is a threat to the world and it will create more distortions simply by being in the real world. Es says this is good-bye but Touya yells for her to wait and that he can’t leave her now. Touya says he hoped they could stay together forever. Es then kisses him and says everything will by all right. When he returns he will have forgotten about Es. Touya screams Es’s name as she says goodbye to the person most dear to her.
Once again, Touya wakes up after school to Hinata’s humming. Mei arrives and apologizes for being late. Touya says he needs to get going and Hinata wishes him luck with his new job, saying it’s a shame Maha Raja closed so suddenly. Touya tries to say that it isn’t a job but decides it’s close enough. Hinata then tells Mei that she received mail from Kuon, saying that she made it back to Ishana safely and to tell Mei that she will keep her promise on the hone of the true Ten Sages. It also says that, due to Elise’s insistence, they will be back in Japan soon. Mei says that means they’ll just have to work even harder. Mei then tells Touya to move out and not to fall behind. In the Restricted Ward, Touya recalls that it’s been two months since the Embryo incident but thanks to Mei and Elise it was mostly covered up. Additionally, Mei wants to build the Amanohokosaka clan’s headquarters here, not wanting to be reliant on the Mitsurugi Agency forever. Touya has been using his abilities to help Mei track down Unions. Touya asks about the Union they were supposed to be chasing but Mei says that Es-N already took care of it so Touya says he’ll see her at school.
The next morning, Touya and Hinata greet Yuki in the hospital and Hinata asks about Akira’s condition. Yuki says he’s started walking and is slowly getting better and it is okay for them to visit him. Yuki tells him that since he is scheduled for rehab he is probably in the garden. After finding Akira, Touya says he looks like he’s doing great but Akira says he can barely move his hands and feels useless. Hinata says she brought Akira some pudding, saying that pudding is happiness. Akira asks if Hinata is going to feed him and she says of course. Akira says it’s a bit embarrassing but Hinata has no idea why. Touya then has flashes of memories about Es and starts crying but he doesn’t know why. Touya runs off to wash his face. Touya then thinks to himself that his feelings for a special someone suddenly burst out but he cannot remember anything. However, Touya is sure that he is connected to that person and that some day he will be able to meet that person again. [12]
