Corporal Karengina Palset ( カレンジーナ=パルセット伍長 Karenji-na Parusetto) is a member of the Novus Orbis Librarium’s Ninth Squadron (”The Hound Unit”). She is a Drive user who has blind faith in her captain, Grimmwood Hastur. Although she is difficult to approach, she’s loyal to those she trusts.
Appearance
Karengina has a dark complexion contrasted by her bright blue eyes. Her hair is black with a singular white streak, and is tied back into multiple drills. Her NOL uniform is quite revealing, showing her torso and the sides of her chest, and has a large pauldron on her left shoulder with an NOL insignia printed on it; it's held in place by a large red rope that ties over her breasts. Karengina also wears wraps around her forearms, and a brown belt underneath her breasts.
Personality
To those she's unfamiliar with, Karengina can come off as cold, aloof, and sarcastic. She does not believe that many can accomplish the tasks that her squadron are often forced to do, and is sceptical of newer members. Despite this, when she warms up to other people, her guard drops and her demeanour becomes kinder. Above all else, her loyalties lie with Grimmwood, who she will go above and beyond for.
Her love for her family was strong enough that she willingly sold herself, and losing them pushed her to become a soldier to avenge them.
Biography
During the Ikaruga Civil War, Karengina and her younger brothers fell on hard times. Since she was desperate for money, she willingly sold herself to a laboratory that studied souls, and it was here that she was forced to awaken her Drive - Seagull. Eventually, she was rescued from the facility by Captain Grimmwood Hastur of the NOL, but when she went back to her home, the 5th Hierarchical City of Ibukido, it had already been completely annihilated by the Nox Nyctores - Gigant: Take-Mikazuchi; her brothers presumably killed in the blast. Karengina joined the NOL in a search for vengeance and to end the war that took her brother’s lives. She was placed under Grimmwood’s command in his squadron.
Spiral Shift
Near the end of the war, Jin Kisaragi was assigned to the Ninth Squadron, and Karengina took an immediate dislike towards him, remarking that he wasn’t needed. Shortly after their unpleasant meeting, the squadron was deployed on an emergency mission to recover a Nox Nyctores that was stolen by Sector Seven, but they had arrived at the destination too late, and were ambushed by the corpses in the lab. Thanks to Karengina’s Drive, they located the “Necromancer” and disposed of it. Unknown to the Ninth Squadron, Relius Clover was watching nearby, and took note of Jin’s weapon (the Mucro Algesco: Yukianesa) and Karengina’s Drive.
An order later came through to attack the Wadatsumi Castle, but Grimmwood took the squadron on a diverting path to find a weapon capable of halting the flow of seithr so it could be destroyed, and potentially end the war. Karengina’s Drive allowed them to find a suspicious entrance, but she was left behind on Grimmwood’s orders with Corporal Honoka (in reality, Hazama).
Before long, Karengina was captured by the NOL’s Zeroth Squadron, led by Meifang Lapislazuli, and was interrogated because of Grimmwood’s ties to Kokonoe. The torture inflicted on her left her in such a state that she was now permanently incapable of activating her Drive. The death of Grimmwood would deeply affect her, and Jin later visited her in hospital.
It’s unknown what happened to Karengina after the Ikaruga Civil War, and if she stayed with the NOL after her torture and Grimmwood’s murder.
Powers and Techniques
Karengina was one of the few Drive users in the world. Her Drive, Seagull, allowed her to sense any nearby being by placing her hands on the floor. However, because of her torture by the Zeroth Squadron, she's now unable to use her Drive.
As a soldier of one of the more dangerous NOL units, Karegina was presumably apt at Ars Magus and combat.
