Overview
Jin Kisaragi is an extremely versatile character that can debilitate his enemies by freezing and slowing them, while also dealing overwhelmingly fast Attacks. Through the use of well-timed inputs or spending MP, he can deal significant damage in a matter of seconds. Jin is usually considered to be one of the hardest characters to master due to the complexity of his kit and the timing of his sheathing and blocking mechanics. However, he is also a very approachable character for beginners as his freezing and slowing mechanics, along with his Talent: Time Stasis, allow players to bring the game to their own pace.
Prototype Abilities
Talent: Time Stasis
After Dodging, enemies slow down for 3.5 seconds. Dodging refers to using the Dash Button with proper timing in order to avoid an enemy's attack. Many moves in the game will be accompanied with "Dodge Frames", which can also trigger this effect. These are typically moves that use the dash input, but some other moves will gain them through Potentials as well. Hakumen is the one exception, as his Dash and attacks all have Super Armor rather than Dodge Frames.
During Time Stasis, both enemies and their projectiles move slowly while Jin remains at full speed. Jin is also completely invulnerable during this time period. The Invulnerability makes Time Stasis an extremely useful option for any character, since it allows you to get in free damage with no risk of taking damage.
Unique Mechanics:
Freezing/Slowing are passive mechanics that affect any enemy you attack. Slowing will cause them to move and attack more slowly, while freezing will cause them to be briefly enshrouded by ice, stopping their movements entirely. Some Attacks and Skills have the ability to slow by default, but all moves can be upgraded to slow and freeze through Universal Enhancement 2.
Sheathing is a timing-based mechanic that allows Jin to use more powerful versions of his moves. After every Attack or Skill, Jin will physically sheathe his weapon and a "flash" animation will appear at the hilt of his sword. When this happens, you need to time your next attack right when the flash appears. If done properly, you'll hear a distinctive sound and the move will be larger and deal more damage than normal. In order to get the sheathing animation to happen, you will need to attack more slowly than you would normally combo. This can sometimes be detrimental if you're in a situation in which you need to attack quickly. Jin's [Airborne] Attacks are great to use before a sheathed attack, as they attack and sheathe much faster than grounded attacks. All moves benefit from being sheathe timed, and the bonuses from sheathing can also be used in tandem with the additional MP effects on Attacks from Universal Enhancement I.
Blocking is another timing-based mechanic that completely nullifies any damage dealt. Once unlocked, you will see a shield effect around Jin while using his Attacks or Skills. The shielding effect is very brief on most moves, making this mechanic quite difficult to use in most cases. However, there's an extremely simple and effective way of using blocking. Jin's Hyouten Danka and the charged version of Fubuki both have blocking frames for the entire duration that you charge them, making both of them an extremely effective tool for moves that are delayed or telegraphed.
Legacy Skill 1: Reitou (Frost Bite)
3 Ice Pillars will erupt from the ground, Freezing any enemy hit for 3 seconds. Freezing Duration increases with level. This is considered to be one of the best Legacy Skills in the game due to its ability to completely stop enemies and bosses from attacking.
Legacy Skill 2: Hyouten Danka [Giant]
Releases a Great Homing Slash, dealing 570 damage. Damage and Attack Range increase with level. This Legacy Skill hits quite a wide area if leveled up in Transcendence mode, but is generally pretty average otherwise. If an area of effect attacking option is what you're looking for there's plenty of other options, so it's generally not worth giving up his first Legacy Skill for this one.
