Nox Nyctores

The Deus Machina: Nirvana (機神・ニルヴァーナキシン・ニルヴァーナ Kishin Niruvāna) is the fourth Nox Nyctores and has the form of a large purple doll. It is one of the few Nox's not designed to combat the Black Beast in the Dark War, and was a major factor in several events during the Ikaruga Civil War. It currently has the personality and soul of Ada Clover and is wielded by Carl Clover.

Information

Nirvana was created by Nine the Phantom during the one year gap in the Dark War where the Black Beast did not move. It was specifically designed to protect Nine's younger sister, Celica A. Mercury, from any harm. It faithfully protected her during the war from Seven, Eight, the Orbis Librarius Norma, as well as the Black Beast itself. At the end of the war, Nine removed its core and placed buried in the 4th Hierarchical City of Naobi - Celica regretted the decision, but knew it had to be done thanks to its remarkable power.

Carl discovers Nirvana

Sector Seven was tipped about its location during the Ikaruga Civil War and hired a mercenary squadron to retrieve it. They were successful, but the entire squadron, save one, was wiped out by the Novus Orbis Librarium and Azrael. Relius Clover took a great interest in Nirvana and created the Fluctus Redactum: Ignis in its image. Using sorcery, Kokonoe was forced into creating a new core for Nirvana using the soul of Ada Clover, Relius' daughter, and she briefly used it to fight off the mad puppeteer. [1] The Nox and Ignis went missing, having being taken by Relius back to his home. Carl Clover found Nirvana in a dark room in the Clover estate, incomplete and with Ada's body inside. [2] He fixed the Nox and completed it by himself. Ex Machina: Minerva is partially based on Nirvana's blueprints left behind by Nine. The event in which Nirvana was retrieved is now known as the Phenomena Weapon Dispossession Operation.

Using Nirvana, Carl has become an incredible vigilante and has been able to fight against opponents such as Ragna the Bloodedge, Relius, and Izayoi. Nu-13, however, has only issued the threat posed by the two as 'B' at best. [3] In the new world created by Ragna, Nirvana is still under Carl's possession.

As a Nox, Nirvana has adverse effects on its wielders mentality; Litchi Faye-Ling has called it "the machine that causes madness". [4] However, Hakumen has stated that this is not the case since Nirvana was not initially designed for combat purposes and that Celica never suffered any adverse effects. Instead, he suggested that it is one's own blood lust that fuels the Nox. In spite of these comments on its passive intention, Nirvana has an arsenal of powerful weaponry; this includes its nails which can extend several feet and cause wounds that will not heal; balls of energy that it can fling at long distances, and a powerful time bomb. [5] Nirvana's nails are made from pieces of the Kushinada's Lynchpin, making them much more durable and deadly. It can work extremely well when paired with Ignis, being able to fight off the likes of Bang Shishigami, Izayoi, and Makoto Nanaya. [6] Nirvana's physical composition is so sturdy that not even firearms can scratch it.[7]

Defying her master's will

Since Ada's soul rests within Nirvana, it seemingly retains most of her personality. She can become upset with Carl and refuse his orders [8], and her own sense of right and wrong has made her even physically stand between Carl and a target. [9] Even with her more recent core, Nirvana retains her memories from her time in the Dark War, recognizing the various Six Heroes and Celica. It's unknown if this is a facet of Nirvana, or if the memories have permeated into Ada's identity.

Appearance-wise, Nirvana is a large purple doll that is 195cm tall. It has a distinctly feminine look and is sometimes referred to as "she/her/hers". Nirvana's face is gray with soft features, soulless eyes and a large crack over its left eye - in the Dark War, this crack was not present and it had pupils. On top of its metallic blonde hair rests a large purple hat with a ring piercing its left side. The arms of Nirvana are long and slim with its thin nails on the end of each arm. Under its metallic dress are small, thin legs that end flatly, with no feet.

Deus Machina: Nirvana

Nox Nyctores number 4. Possessed by Carl.

Carl dislikes it when people call it Nirvana. It's a weaponized machine-doll created during the Dark War, and was possessed by Celica at the time.[10]

Etymology

Deus is Latin for "god" while Machina means "machine." This lines up with the Japanese title 機神 kishin, which uses the characters for "machine" and "god" respectively.

"Nirvana" is a transcendent Buddhist state in which a soul is released from the cycle of karma, death, and rebirth; thus Deus Machina: Nirvana can translate as "God Machine: Nirvana" or "Machine God: Nirvana".
