The Amaterasu Unit, also known as the Master Unit, is one of the three Sankishin, and governs time. It has the power to grant any humanoid individual immense Observational power, and is capable of using Phenomenon Intervention to influence any major or minor phenomena.

Information

Amaterasu has existed for an unknown amount time, primarily residing within the Boundary. Its brother unit, the Susano'o Unit, was in a cycle of creation and destruction with Amaterasu, and grew sick of the position after growing a soul.[1] Susano'o made himself known to humanity, making them aware of Amaterasu's existence. The Prime Field Devices were made to interact with Amaterasu, and one, The Origin, became the first Eye of the Azure, a being that serves as the Master Unit's eyes in the real world and has immense Observational power. This began the Prime Field War, and Amaterasu, with help from the Takamagahara System, created a new world as the previous one was destroyed in the war.[2]

In this new world, Amaterasu was used by The Origin to constantly reset time whenever the date reached December 31st, 2199 - the date that the Central Fiction, Ragna the Bloodedge, would die. Noel Vermillion was born in one of these loops, and shattered the timeloop when she saved Ragna from falling into a cauldron with Nu-13, making her the new Eye.[3] Noel caused the Continuum Shift with her new power, and was turned into Mu-12 by Yuuki Terumi in order to find and kill Amaterasu, but the plan ultimately failed.[4] Izanami began a tug of war with Amaterasu, using Takamagahara's Phenomenon Interventions to force the Master Unit to Observe different realities, bringing it closer to the edge of the Nemesis Horizon, a floating cauldron above the 5th Hierarchical City of Ibukido.

In the February of 2200, Nu was able to coax Amaterasu out of the Boundary via the Nemesis Horizon, making it appear physically in the world for the first time. Izanami attempted to use Gigant: Take-Mikazuchi to destroy Amaterasu, but Rachel Alucard used the Tsukuyomi Unit to block the blow, reaching a stalemate.[5]

The world that Amaterasu created eventually died, and certain individuals that were absorbed into the Embryo were picked by Amaterasu to become the chosen. When Amaterasu descended into the Embryo, they had their memories restored. Nine the Phantom created the 11th Nox Nyctores - the Corpus Sepulcro: Requiem with the goal of replacing Amaterasu and The Origin, but her plan failed to succeed.[6] Susano'o was resurrected, and Amaterasu chose Es as her guardian, but recognized that she could not defeat the God.[7] Ragna eventually killed Susano'o and created a new world using the dreams of the chosen with Amaterasu's Observation.[8][9][10]

Amaterasu takes the form of something akin to a giant satellite, with three spires protruding from its bottom half. It has several crimson banners and a giant coffin on the front.

Amaterasu has two powers - the Izanagi System which is its incredible power of creation, and Izanami, the Drive of The Origin, which embodies death and balances Izanagi's incredible power. Is is also capable of using Phenomenon Intervention on an absolutely massive scale, dwarfing any Observer in that it is able to Observe both any minor and major phenomena, and is capable of rewinding time. Amaterasu has used Embryo's twice to create new worlds, although it requires a formidable amount of seithr to do so. Furthermore, it is immune to seithr.

Amaterasu Unit

One of the Sankishin. The Original unit that exists deep within the Boundary.

It's also known as the 'Master Unit' or the 'Master Unit Amaterasu', and has the ability to use Phenomena Intervention on a massive scale. Terumi and Takamagahara are trying to destroy it.[11]

Izanagi System

The power of creation as preserved by the Master Unit. Izanami was born as its opposite and equal force.[12]

Etymology

Amaterasu-no-Mikoto is the Shinto Goddess of the sun, and is arguably the most sacred deity in that religion. Her name means "(that which) illuminates Heaven". All three Sankishin are named after the three most important children of Izanagi-no-Mikoto. The Amaterasu Unit in BlazBlue deliberately mirrors some of the mythos that Amaterasu was involved in, such as her difficulties with her brother, Susano'o-no-Mikoto, and being coaxed out of a cave back into the human world.
